I am originally from Brooklyn, New York and currently live with my husband, John and son, Sebastian in Fairfield, Connecticut.
I am a board-certified pediatrician and board certified pediatric gastroenterologist. I am an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Yale University, director of Pediatric Gastroenterology at Greenwich Hospital in Greenwich, Connecticut and medical director of the Yale Pediatric Celiac Program. I have a strong interest in pediatric nutrition and education, especially in the care of children with celiac disease, feeding problems, and slow weight gain. While in medical school I became interested in the medical management of overweight and obese children. I was the medical director of the Fit Kids Wellness program for overweight and obese children at New York Hospital Queens for four years before I joined the faculty at Yale.
I enjoy teaching medical students, residents and other health care professionals, as well as the general public. I am on the advisory board for the American Academy of Pediatrics where I write questions and answers to help pediatric gastroenterologists prepare for their board exams. In addition, I write and edit brochures for parents on common gastroenterology conditions as part of the public education committee of the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (www.gikids.org). I also enjoy giving talks to local schools and in the community to teach children and parents on a variety of gastrointestinal diseases.
My interest in nutrition initially began as a very personal one. I was always considered husky as a child and by the time I was in college, I weighed over 270 pounds. Through a change in my diet and with exercise, I was able to slowly lose weight (over 100 lbs!) and live a healthier lifestyle. I completed both the New York City and Boston marathons and have run many half marathons. Now, I always try to keep the workouts exciting and new and incorporate healthy habits into my diet. I live in Fairfield, CT with my husband and son who have been the taste testers to many of the recipes in the book.
